Via Kevin Melrose, Keith Giffen makes the connection I was missing re: why are all the current super-victims members of the comedy JLA?

Let's set the record straight: Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Fire, Ice and those characters, the only reason why we used them is they were the only characters we were allowed to use.... So, it wasn't like we said, 'Let's bring in Booster Gold,' it was much more like going to DC and asking who we could have.

Much as it probably should have, it just didn't occur to me that DC is as unnerved by the prospect of their super-heroes doing comedy schtick as they are killing said heroes. Given that, the "characters you can be silly with" and "characters you can kill off" lists wind up having a heavy amount of overlap. Add to that raised profiles for the sillified characters via Formerly Known as the Justice League and I Can't Believe it's not the Justice League, and it almost seems a statistical given that DC would kill a "silly Leaguer" next time they needed a death to kick off an event.

The simultaneous scheduling still strikes me as odd, but I've decided I'm just going to think of it as counter-programming. Countdown is the Super (hero) Bowl, I Can't Believe... is the Comedy Central movie marathon running opposite.

stotangirl, dealio, and I have this set up, and I don't know if anyone else does or not, where from time to time one of us will collect a series we're all interested in. I buy Fade from Blue, then lend the issues to Laura to read. Laura and Scott get Amelia Rules then I devour them when I come visit. That sort of thing. It's a little bit economical, a little bit social. I like it, anyway.

This weekend, the notable borrowed book I read through was the first four issues of Green Lantern: Rebirth. spoilers for those issues, so a cut tag and a warning:

So, yeah. As a means of bringing in brand new readers, I'm not sure this does much. Whether the new/old status quo for Hal is engaging, too, is a separate question I have no answer for. But as a big, wacky ideas Green Lantern story, I have to admit Green Lantern: Rebirth has thus far done its job.
